Laajalahti is part of the Natura 2000 network and one of Finland's most significant bird wetlands. The Maari birdwatching tower is one of the best places in the Helsinki metropolitan area for birdwatching. In summer, grazing cows keep the shore meadows open. The Elfvik tower is also located north of the bay. The birdwatching tower is easily accessible by metro and express tram 15. The nearest metro station is Aalto University, from where it is about a 1-kilometre walk to the tower. The nearest tram stops are Aalto University (M) and Maari. From the Maari stop, it is about a 500-metre walk to the birdwatching tower.
