About this place

Lemminkäinen's Cliff, also known as Sammonmäki, is a well-known aircraft spotting location near Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. The cliff offers a view towards the airport, and when the runway direction is right, landing aircraft can fly directly over the cliff. The cliff can be reached by a short path near the junction of Puusepäntie and Kulomäentie. It's advisable to check the direction of air traffic before your trip, as planes do not continuously fly over the spot in the same way. The location is well-suited for a small plane-spotting adventure with children. It is a natural rock formation, not a built viewing platform, so the terrain is uneven in places, and caution should be exercised with children near the edges of the cliff. Good to know before you go: Lemminkäinen's Cliff is at its best when air traffic on Helsinki-Vantaa runway 1 is approaching from the direction of Sammonmäki. Runway usage varies according to weather and wind conditions, among other factors, so planes do not always fly over the cliff. It is advisable to check flight paths before departure, for example, on Flightradar24. The route leading to the cliff is rocky, and the cliff itself is uneven and steep in places. With small children, move carefully near the edges of the cliff, and the route is not well suited for prams. Planes can fly very close over the cliff, so ear defenders may be a good accessory for small children.
