The wooded sports park covers an area of 66 hectares. The Pirkkola swimming and ball games hall, representing functionalism and completed in 1968, was the starting point for the development of sports parks, which was central to Helsinki's sports facility construction from the 1960s onwards. Pirkkola Sports Park was implemented based on the proposal of architecture firm Kaija and Heikki Sirén. Extensive renovations to the swimming and ball games hall were completed at the end of 2002, and the hall was opened to the public in January 2003.
