About this place

From the Kuivasjärvi birdwatching tower located in Alavus, you can see many kinds of birds. The birdwatching tower was completed in 2003 and there used to be a dance pavilion nearby, which has since been dismantled. You can leave your car in the dance pavilion's parking lot, and the walking distance along a forest path to the birdwatching tower is 200m. During bird migration, many ducks rest and feed on Kuivasjärvi. During migration, you might also see, for example, black-necked grebes, various goose species, sanderlings, and common scoters. The breeding species of this lake include, or have included, for example, garganey, water rail, little crake, little gull, Canada goose, western marsh harrier, and red-necked phalarope (in the 1970s). Other bird species have also been seen on Kuivasjärvi, such as gadwall, common sandpiper, black-tailed godwit, tundra bean goose, and parasitic jaeger. Even our beautiful national bird, the whooper swan, nested on Kuivasjärvi for the first time in 2003. It is advisable to visit the birdwatching tower in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not shining directly. When ascending the tower, there is a visitor limit of 10 people at a time. You can find the birdwatching tower along main road 18 on Peräseinäjoentie. When coming from the centre of Alavus towards Peräseinäjoki, there is a sharp left turn, at which point there is an access road to the birdwatching tower.
