About this place
Area: 57 ha Acquisition year: 2006 Nautical chart series A 623 Pirtisaari has had permanent settlement since the 18th century, and there are still year-round residents. The island has housed a customs and coast guard station and has long served as a defence base in the Gulf of Finland. When the army left the island, the Lerviksudden area was acquired for recreational use, and Makkaraudden was transferred to Metsähallitus as a recreational and protected area. From the time of the island's fortification, there is one cannon battery in the area managed by Metsähallitus, and two cannon batteries, bunkers, and a fire control tower in the Lerviksudden area of the recreational area association. These structures are still owned by the defence forces. They were maintained and renovated until the early 1960s, but are now classified as war-historical monuments. Landing by boat is best in Svartviken bay, on the eastern side of which there is a pier for visitors to the recreational area. The pier at the end of the bay, formerly a coast guard station, is privately owned. You can walk along the cart track to Lerviksudden to admire the open view of the Gulf of Finland. Söderskär lighthouse shimmers in the south. The islands and rocky capes in the southern and southwestern parts of Pirttisaari, as well as the Makkaraudden and Lerviksudden capes, are valuable for landscape protection. Natural habitats vary from lush forests to rocky coastal types, forming a diverse and valuable whole. Pirttisaari's Kylälahti forms a representative traditional archipelago landscape. On the high Korsberget rock, there is a wooden cross dating from the 19th century, erected in memory of a drowned fisherman's son. Pirtisaari has daily scheduled ferry service from Kalkkiranta, Sipoo. The timetable is available at www.portoline.net. The nearest scheduled ferry pier on the island is in Kylälahti, at the former school beach. The school building is privately owned, so unauthorised access to the yard area is not permitted. Routes from the scheduled ferry piers to the Lerviksudden area pass by the houses and yards of Pirttisaari residents, and the peace of the local residents should be respected.
