About this place

The Pukkipalo trail is one of the most popular sections of the entire Kuhankuono hiking trail network. The reason is clear – one of Southwest Finland's finest old-growth forest sites, the Pukkipalo ancient forest area, is located along this route. If you want to see a forest as it develops untouched by human hand, you should come here. Pukkipalo and its surrounding areas are part of Kurjenrahka National Park, and will thus remain an untouched ancient spruce forest in the future. The Pukkipalo trail is mostly easy to traverse, although there are more demanding sections on the cliffs of Huhtaniitunmäki and Takaniitunvuori. It is advisable to allow a good three hours for a leisurely circuit of the route. The route is a total of 9 km long if Rantapiha on the shore of Lake Savojärvi is used as the starting point. If you drive your car to the Pukkipalo car park, the circuit is only about five kilometres. Sausages can be grilled along the way at the Takaniitunvuori rest stop, which has a campfire site with benches, and at Rantapiha, which has a barbecue shelter, a toilet, and a kiosk on summer weekends. Lake Lakjärvi, a severe blackwater bog pond, and two lean-tos with campfire sites are located 600 metres from the route along the northern connecting trail branching off the Pukkipalo route. A spur trail also branches off to the Paltanvuori lookout point. The Rantapiha car park is ploughed in winter, making it accessible, and if there is enough snow, it is possible to set off from there onto the Kuhankuono ski trail. The route runs through the Nousiainen and Mynämäki areas.
