About this place

Penkkivuori in Töysä is a very interesting and historical place for a day trip. Penkkivuori is a rock formation shaped by the Ice Age, which about a hundred years ago became a quarry for stonecutters, from which granite was quarried for construction sites in Tuuri and all over Ostrobothnia. In ancient times, the Korpinen and Metsälä brothers carried out stone quarrying. Granite was used, for example, for stone barns and railway bridges, until stone was replaced by steel and concrete on construction sites. Thus, stone quarrying also ended in Penkkivuori more than fifty years ago. The highest point of Penkkivuori was called Keinukallio, where after the quarrying, people began to gather on summer Saturdays for dances, accompanied by folk musicians. More historical information can be read from the information sign found on site. On site, it is worth walking around the rock formations, as the boulders form fun small caves on different sides, in the shelter of which you can have a campfire or even spend the night if you wish. Especially for children, the destination is an exciting experience. It is quite difficult to draw up clear route instructions for Penkkivuori. The easiest way to reach the site is to turn from Tuuri onto Holkonkyläntie, drive for about 1.2 km and turn right onto Sorilantie. Continue on this gravel road for about 1.5 km, until you turn right again, onto Korpisentie. Continue on Korpisentie for about 2 km, until a smaller road turns off to the right. There is no signage at this point. Coordinates for the destination: 62.554697, 23.719593
