The western shore of Hietasalo has long sand areas that are excellent for sunbathing and swimming. The island also has the City of Kuopio's water intake plant and artificial groundwater area, dictating where landing must occur. Strong winds from the south-west and north-west can make landing difficult. The island has a ship pier, two cooking shelters, three separate campfire sites and woodsheds, two dry toilets, a composter, and waste collection points. Firewood is supplied at the site.
