Hietasalo's western shore has long sandy areas, which are excellent for sunbathing and swimming, among other activities. The island also has Kuopio city's water intake and artificial groundwater area, subject to which landing must occur. Strong southwesterly and northwesterly winds can make landing difficult. The island has a ship pier, two cooking shelters, three separate campfire sites and woodsheds, two toilets, a composter, and waste collection points. Firewood supply is available at the site.
