About this place

Puijo is one of Kuopio's most popular nature destinations, known for its old spruce forests, rich grove vegetation, and magnificent landscapes. The area is crisscrossed by several outdoor routes, which are ski trails in winter, as well as smaller, heavily used forest paths. Due to its extensive nature, Puijo is excellent for outdoor activities and forest hiking. One marked mountain biking route runs through the area; mountain biking is prohibited on other paths and off-path. The unique natural values make Puijo an excellent environmental education destination, also suitable for teaching groups. The northern part of the Kokonmäki-Satulanotko area in central Puijo consists of a nature reserve. Satulanotko has Puijo's finest grove area, which is most beautiful in early summer when lush ferns grow and wood sorrel blooms. In the middle of the area is the Konttila heritage farm with its meadows. The heritage farm offers, among other things, an outdoor and ski track cafe and farm animals. On the southern edge of the area is Puijo's frisbee golf course. The Kokonmäki-Satulanotko area includes two nature trails of about 2 km each: Konttilan kierto starting from the Puijo tower area, and Kokonmäenkierto located on the eastern slopes of Kokonmäki, which can be started from Konttila or the lower part of Antikkala slope. Puijo forest can be accessed by foot and bike from nearby residential areas. Several bus lines run around the ridge, and many stops are right at the edge of the forest. The elevation differences make Puijo's terrain challenging: generally, Puijo is not accessible.
