About this place

The Apajalahti nature trail is a varied, moderately challenging 2.8-kilometre circular route, also suitable for snowshoeing. The nature trail showcases a private landowner's four-part nature reserve, the most significant part of which is a black alder swamp, one of Finland's most representative. The route also runs along cliffs, which are former islands of Ancient Saimaa. The cliffs are slippery when wet. The nature trail sometimes passes through commercial forests and farm roads, taking the hiker alongside and across former fields. The route is etched into the terrain and marked with orange ribbons. There are seven 'You are here' route maps at the most important intersections. Caution must be exercised when handling fire at the rock shelter in the Apajalahti nature reserve. There is no waste collection at the shelter or the service building. Private landowners are responsible for the nature trail and its structures. Overnight stays at the shelter and summer outbuilding are possible with the landowner's permission. Programme services are also organised at the shelter. The nature trail is not suitable for mountain biking. The Nature Trail Apajalahti is located in a private nature reserve. This trail will introduce hikers to an old protected lake’s shore forest and to a black alders wetland. Trail difficulty is moderate, partly slippery if wet. Trail is marked with orange colour and maps "You are here". Not suitable for mountain biking.
