About this place

The path presents the stages and equipment of a timber transfer facility that operated in the 1920s (in operation 1923-1929) and memories of armament works during the war years 1941-1944: sites of wartime defence positions (connecting, trench, and combat trenches, collapsed machine gun nests, blown up concrete bunkers), sites of a field railway built by the Germans during the Continuation War (1942-1944) (construction period 1940-1941). The Lahtela-Vanttaja path is 4.5 km long and runs from Lahtela to Vanttajajärvi. Along the path there are 16 information boards (Finnish, German, English). Driving instructions: From Kuusamo town centre, about 6 km south along Kajaanintie (VT5), then left onto Lämsänkyläntie for about 9 km.
