About this place

https://www.kuhmo.fi/kulttuuri-ja-vapaa-aika/museot/talvisotamuseo/taistelut/ Three regiments of the Soviet 54th Division crossed the national border at the end of November 1939, and by January 1940, the entire Saunajärventie route was under enemy control. The attack halted, and Soviet troops built accommodation dugouts and combat positions in terrain suitable for defence. At Löytövaara, the Red Army built large dugouts on both sides of the road, and combat positions with machine gun nests near them. The Finns encircled the Löytövaara base as a motti (pocket) in a major offensive launched by Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo's troops on 29.1.1940. Finally, the besieged base was captured by Battle Group Arponen on 11.2.1940. The structures were destroyed with smoke and explosive charges. The municipality of Kuhmo has surveyed the area and restored one accommodation dugout and two machine gun nests. There is also a memorial stone on site.
