Melkuttimet

The Melkuttimet area is entirely part of the Natura 2000 programme and the shore and ridge protection programmes. The shores have remained undeveloped, with the exception of a few cabins, and the gravel treasure of the ridges has not been touched at all. Forestry was practised in the area until the late 1990s, but to improve its natural state and increase forest biodiversity, Metsähallitus has begun restoration work. Several endangered or rare plant and animal species have been found in the ridge area belonging to Salpausselkä.
