About this place
Area: 57 ha Acquisition year: 2006 Nautical chart series A 623 Pirttisaari has had permanent settlement since the 18th century and still has year-round residents. The island has hosted a customs and coastguard station and has long served as a defensive base in the Gulf of Finland. When the army left the island, the Lerviksudden area was acquired for recreational use, and Makkaraudden transferred to Metsähallitus (Parks & Wildlife Finland) as a recreation and conservation area. From the time of the island's fortification, there is one gun emplacement in the area managed by Metsähallitus, and the Lerviksudden recreational area association has two gun emplacements, bunkers, and a fire control tower. These structures are still owned by the defence forces. They were maintained and renovated even in the early 1960s, but are now classified as military-historical monuments. Landing by boat is best done in Svartviken bay, on the eastern side of which there is a pier for those arriving at the recreation area. The pier of the former coastguard station at the head of the bay is privately owned. A cart track leads to Lerviksudden, offering open views of the Gulf of Finland. Söderskär lighthouse shimmers in the south. The islands and rocky headlands in the southern and southwestern parts of Pirttisaari, as well as the Makkaraudden and Lerviksudden headlands, are valuable for landscape protection. The natural habitats vary from lush forests to rocky coastal habitats, forming a diverse and valuable ensemble. Pirttisaari's Kylälahti forms a representative traditional archipelago landscape. On the high Korsberget rock there is a wooden cross dating from the 1800s, erected in memory of a drowned fisherman's boy. Pirttisaari has daily scheduled boat service from Kalkkiranta in Sipoo. The timetable is at www.portoline.net. On the island, the nearest scheduled boat pier is in Kylälahti, at the former school shore. The school building is privately owned, so it is not permitted to stay in the yard without permission. The routes from the scheduled boat piers to the Lerviksudden area pass close to the houses and yards of Pirttisaari residents, and the peace of the local residents should be respected.
