About this place

The Varikattilankierros is an approximately 3.2-kilometre-long nature trail, starting from the car park of Lehmiranta Holiday Centre. Along the trail, you will see both Lehmiranta's new Arttu nature reserve and the Varikattilanmäki area, which has been protected since 1982. Kuukallio and Varikattilanmäki together form a nationally valuable rock area complex. Varikattilanmäki features both a 'Russian oven' and a 'devil's field'. The 'Russian oven' is an old stone oven protected by the Antiquities Act, which was used for baking bread and drying fish. The construction of these ovens mainly dates back to the Great and Lesser Northern Wars in the early 18th century, and they are most commonly found in areas where Russian galley fleets operated. Varikattila's 'devil's field' covers about one hectare. A 'devil's field' is a formation from the Ice Age, and the area also shows other signs of the Ice Age, such as large erratics. From the highest point of the trail, magnificent views of Lake Lehmijärvi open up. The trail is marked with red fibre ribbon. Only walking is permitted on the trail; cycling is prohibited. The trail is challenging in places, so it is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. In the immediate vicinity of the area are Lehmijärvi beach and Lehmiranta Holiday Centre, whose café serves refreshments to those passing through.
